HowlRound Theatre Commons: I don’t like working on the plays as much as I like going out for dinner after.
After we’ve heard a new play aloud at the table in the Ingram New Works Lab, after we’ve talked through the feedback from the room, after we’ve met with the directors and the dramaturgs, all the playwrights go out and have a meal together. Nashville has spectacular restaurants; locally grown ingredients and caring hands produce the distinct flavors that unmistakably reflect the culture of the city.

I think I remember the dinner after the show for most of the productions I’ve worked on. It truly is memorable. This article really touched me– collaboration is such an important part of theatre, and dinner is sometimes where it shows up.
I’m glad that there is such a community built into the Nashville theatre scene, and that it seems to care for every writer and designer and artist in each project. I loved that the article expanded its definition of what “food” was to a designer. “We offer [writers] access to anything we can reach. . . making sure they have the exact sort of donuts they like, . . bringing in physicists to outline the multiverse,. . . taking a field trip to the zoo.” The way that the design process was talked about in this article made it seem fun, like play, which is what theatre is. But unfortunately, under time constraints and other pressure, I think that can get a little lost. It was sweet to hear this story and be reminded of great theatre atmospheres.
