A Bright Room Called Day at Carnegie Mellon University has a timely message

Theater Reviews + Features | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: Nearly a decade before his 1993 Broadway explosion with Angels in America, Tony Kushner debuted A Bright Room Called Day and even here his enormous imagination and intellect are apparent. The show’s never been seen in Pittsburgh, a situation rectified by a remarkable Carnegie Mellon University production directed by Jed Allen Harris.

I loved Angels in America so much. So I guess I love, or at the very least like Tony Kushner and his work. For me angels in a America was such a powerful play and movie. I just felt like I connected with it right away, and full understood the struggles in a deep and touching way. If the Carnegie Mellon production of bright room called day, is anything like angels in America I might be brought to tears. Then again with the contents of the shows descriptions the emotion might be driven in a different direction. I have seen pictures of the sent and some of the lighting, I can tell you. I am very impressed with the value already and I have not seen the show yet. I am very excited to see this show and be pulled in to another Tony Kushner play, and I have high hopes for its success.

I really love Tony Kushner and this piece in particular. Last year I took an english seminar that culminated in a senior thesis project that I got to choose based around the topic of political theatre and I decided to pick a show that I felt was relevant and important to today's political climate. With little to no hesitation after reading and looking at shows for a good month or so with my english and directing teachers at my high school i finally was able to discover Tony's a Bright Room Called Day. It was perfect for the time at hand and when I saw the season announcement last year that this production was going to be apart of the school of drama's season it immediately made me proud to be apart of such a community with such topical and important pieces as such. I am beyond excited to see the piece for myself this upcoming week it will actually be my first time seeing the piece preformed live I've seen a number of online showings and read the play several times myself I am truly excited to see what the wonderful production that the school of drama has put on looks like.

I honestly knew nothing about A Bright Room Called Day before I came into the Chosky to see it. I knew the set looked beautiful and the story revolved around the fall of the Weimar Republic but that is about it. I was pleasantly surprised and intrigued by the political concepts and the stories of each individual as the play unfolded. I think the play was very appropriate for the current politically charged society we live in. Though it wasn’t possible to represent every kind of person living in our community today I felt that the audience had a strong connection to the internal struggles between the group of friends and the individual characters themselves. What I took away from this play is that sticking together is important. Being with the people you care about in times of need can lift the heart, and also to speak out against what you believe is wrong, like what Zilla was constantly doing.
