It's No Myth, Carnegie Mellon's Spring Carnival Is Legendary

www.cmu.edu/news: Booths, buggies and live entertainment — Carnegie Mellon University's 104th installment of Spring Carnival promises to be a magical weekend. This year's theme, Myths and Legends, has been among the top 10 most suggested themes in past years and was last year's runner-up, said Spring Carnival chairs Hannah Koschmeder, a junior in business administration and statistics and data science, and Stephen Clark, a junior in computer science. Some of the booths will feature children's favorites like "The Chronicles of Narnia" and "Harry Potter," while others will feature iconic topics such as "Santa's Workshop" and "Titanic."

Spring Carnival is something I have heard about for some time now since I was accepted and started attending Carnegie Mellon University. I’ve seen it on the calendars and heard more and more things about it as it got closer and closer. It was more so a mystery at first; like why we had this time off, was it a real carnival or some carnival type thing, and many other questions popped into my mind. Now I’m just excited to see what it really is and enjoy it and this time off. Frankly it comes at an amazing time because the students here really do work extremely hard and can forget to take a break as I know I have this semester. I’m looking forward to enjoying this time off and actually getting to see carnival for myself rather than at the words of people have already have. This really is one break that everyone needs and one that isn’t just about catching up on sleep but actually getting out and enjoying the other things in life.

I totally agree with Nicholaus. I had heard about Carnival since I was accepted to CMU, but I didn’t realize how awesome it was until this weekend. I found it so surreal and fun to see the whole campus transformed into an actual amusement park. There is something magical and strange about Carnival that doesn’t happen at other times in the year. Now I understand why people enjoy that weekend so much, not just because of the parties but because it is a time to rest and have fun that we don’t normally take during other weekends. It's just a good time to relax and have fun. Now that I know what it's like, I’m looking forward to future Carnivals and I understand the hype. As Nicolaus mentioned, Carnival becomes such a relief because we work hard to consistently and it is definitely a good reminder to know when to take a break, rather than just working all the time.

It is interesting to look at all the hype and "legend" surrounding CMU's spring carnival. I won't deny, having participated in and come out the other side of this weekend, it definitely is a memorable and fun experience! I personally was pleasantly surprised by the sudden appearance of carnival rides on campus, as I never thought (for whatever reason), that it was actually a "carnival". Huh. In other news, I thought that the buggy races were one of the CMU events that actually did somewhat live up to the hype! As for the concert, not so much. Judging by the production value, I was led to wonder how hard it would be to get someone somewhat recognizable to come an perform as opposed to... whoever did come and perform. In any case, Carnival did overall leave me feeling satisfied and refreshed, and I'm ready to finish the year out strong!

Going into Carnival, I didn't know much about what would be happening and how it would be aside from the buggy races and from pictures I saw. But going to Carnival with friends and hanging out there really showed me the tradition and the basis of the hype around Carnival. Besides actually having things like carnival rides, carnival games, and fun events going on, there were also so many things that I didn't expect to be as cool as they were. Booth, for example, was absolutely mind blowing to me. Seeing it go up, I was shocked by the sheer size and scope of the things people do at Carnival, and the finished booths were stunning achievements, especially in the time frame the clubs and groups had to do them. Because of doing Buggy and the Sweepstakes races I didn't have a chance to really enjoy all Carnival had to offer, but it was a jam packed, wild, and exhausting week that for once made me happy to come back to class. I loved every second and can't wait to do it all again next year!
