Download an Archive of 16,000 Sound Effects from the BBC: A Fascinating History of the 20th Century in Sound

Open Culture: I was crate digging at my local used vinyl emporium a little while ago and came across some sound effects records from the early ‘60s. Nothing amazing, until I checked the track list and noticed “Sounds of Football Match -- ‘Block that Kick!’”

Being interested in sound design I have heard a lot about this action by the BBC. I think it is cool that they would make this move and give this amazing resource to the world, but there is a catch. With the release of all of this work there is a rights issue. Theses sounds are people’s property so using them is infringing on copyright laws. As of now the allowed uses of theses sounds are very specific and kind of weird. When asked about the allowed uses of these sounding in the ongoing rights and royalties question they responded that the uses of these sounds could be for “Student Film Competitions, Research into sound therapy for people with PTSD, School music lessons, school history lessons, free-to-access artistic installations, musical compositions that are not commercialized, used as sounds to trigger dementia patients” The allowed uses of these sounds are spelled out by the BBC and they are quite weird and specific. So until the rights confusion is figured out the uses of these free sounds are very limited and you must be careful what you use them for unless you want the BBC on your back.
