Puerto Rican Comedy Troupe Aims To Lift Up Spirits Of Those Living On, Off The Island
NPR: Popular Puerto Rican sketch comedy group Teatro Breve has been touring the U.S. mainland with a hilarious take on how Puerto Ricans living off the island dealt with Hurricane Maria.

After the tragedy of hurricane Maria it never really occurred to me the ways in which Puerto Ricans off of the island might be dealing with seeing news of the hurricane and not being able to contact their loved ones. It also didn’t immediately occur to me that comedy would be a way to help aid this problem-- nevertheless, the comedy troupe performing in different cities in America about Puerto Ricans witnessing hurricane Maria seems like a positive way to lift the spirit of their audiences. In times of tragedy art often emerges, and this can take the form of theatre, fine art, street art, photography etc. but all are equally important in the healing process of a community. It is also uplifting to hear about more Puerto Rican representation in entertainment and comedy, especially after hurricane Maria. I know a few people who were born on the island and still have family over there dealing with the aftermath of the disaster, and it’s unimaginable to think what they must be going through every day. I wonder what they would think about this comedy troupe and if they too would identify with the struggles they talk about.
