La Jolla Playhouse names Debby Buchholz as new managing director

The San Diego Union-Tribune: In her nearly 16 years as La Jolla Playhouse general manager, Debby Buchholz has been part of some significant history — from the launch of the smash-hit musical “Jersey Boys” in 2004 to the current Broadway success of the Playhouse-bred “Come From Away.”

Growing up in San Diego and going to see shows at the Playhouse this article holds a special place for me. San Diego is a place that is committed to theater and has a huge theater scene with venues and companies like The Old Globe, Cygnet, San Diego Repertory Theater, and of course the La Jolla Playhouse, along with the large community theater networks in this county. It is so refreshing to see that the La Jolla playhouse has chosen an extremely qualified person to fill this position, a person dedicated to the arts who I believe will help the further development of art within the Playhouse and the greater San Diego area and maybe even the landscape of American theater seeing that the La Jolla Playhouse has such a wide reach in the national theater scene as a whole. I think it is even better that this extremely qualified person is a San Diego native woman and mother. I am hoping that getting a female voice in this position of power will lead to more diversity and equality on stage and offstage at The Playhouse.
