More Than Just Horse Play - A review of "Equus"

'Burgh Vivant: Few plays explore the relationship between psychiatrist and patient better than Peter Shaffer’s 1973 play “Equus.” For that very reason, it has been a go-to piece for theaters from the collegiate level all the way up to the Broadway.

I read Equus in highschool and I got to see it at the Public last year and I really enjoyed the production. I think putting the show in the round could be really interesting because it's such an intimate play, that bringing the audience into the space makes sense. While I think the play is a fascinating story, it's also a little dated in the way that it romanticizes Alan’s pain and mental illness. But I like that the review beings up that Equus is not just the weird horse play, but it actually brings up relevant and important questions. But it does bring up the question, other than shock value, why does this play get done over and over and over? By now people know the story, so what keeps us coming back again and again? I would be interested to see this production and how different it is from others that I have seen.
