www.broadwayworld.com: The Tony Awards has just announced that this year's Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre will go to industry icons Andrew Lloyd Webber and Chita Rivera.
"The cultural impact that Chita and Andrew have had on the international theatre community and on theatre education, has been immeasurable,"

I think these recognitions are LONG overdue. Lloyd Webber is a powerhouse in the musical world and although a few of his works didn’t quite make the mainstream, overall he is one of the most recognized composers. Right up there with Rodgers and Hammerstein and Lerner and Lowe. Ms. Rivera herself is an accomplished actress, singer, and dancer. I can’t believe that it has take the American Theatre Wing this long to recognize two of the most iconic names in the industry with these awards. I certainly hope that with this, we continue to get years of work out of both of them and that this is not the industry’s way of telling them it's time to move on. That would be a shame. I am excited for the next chapter from Lloyd Webber and Ms. Rivera. I also hope that during the broadcast we get to hear the speeches from these two and that the producers of the show don’t cut it out for the sake of some musical act. That would be an insult to the incredible talent and genius of these two individuals and to artists everywhere.
