In the entertainment industry the cry for diversity is starting to ring louder and slowly starting to resonate in the ears of casting directors. We are seeing the call for racial and gender diversity, but we really aren’t seeing the push for increased representation of different abled talent. But, this year has really changed that. Casing a deaf actor in a role of a deaf character is how it should be, but historically a hearing actor has been cast and then they try to learn sign language. I think it is so important that the deaf community and the differently abled community gets representation on stage. In the Off-Broadway and Broadway theater world “Spring Awakening” and now “Children of a Lesser God” have been productions that have made steps toward increasing the representation of deaf actors on stage. This year was also a good year for deaf and disabled actors in film. “Baby Driver” and “The Quiet Place” both have deaf talent on screen. And this year’s winner of Best Picture had mute protagonist that signed on screen. All of these productions are making it clear that representation of the disabled community is a call that is only going to get louder.
