Baldwin-Whitehall teen produces musicals to benefit Make-a-Wish

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Baldwin High School junior Mikayla Davic still has one year remaining in her five-year effort to raise $50,000 before she graduates for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

But the 17-year-old is just about there.

That’s because, despite the frigid weather last weekend, a new attendance record was set at the fourth musical the teen has written, produced, directed and acted in since 2014.

Mikayla is truly inspiring. In only 7th grade she had the idea to create a new play and give the profits to Make-a –wish a great charity. What is also amazing is that the community is coming together to also help and support. For her most recent production she got “a cast of 71 students in kindergarten through 12th grade and included over 17 songs from the ’60”. For s young adult to be able to first get a cast of the size and then be able to manage them is truly amazing.

This has me thinking if our school could be doing something like this. We all love theatre and we produce new works all the time. What if we spent a week creating a new show and putting it up to give the money to charity? It’s a win-win for everyone. Us drama students get to work on a new show, while raising money for charity.

A very inspiring story. I am impressed by Mikayla and her feats starting as early as seventh grade but what she has been doing is truly selfless. I know so many people, had they been in Mikayla’s shoes, would have used the proceeds for many other things. Using the money, they would have bought new products, upgraded their phone, spent it on other ridiculous stuff and even a friend or two who would have invested it in stock and either made money, which they would keep investing and saving, or lost it all. What she is doing is not only inspiring because she is doing good, but it gives me hope in humanity and in theatre. Seeing such a selfless person do so much good for people she will never meet is inspiring in itself but is gives me that hope that there are still good people out there who care. So many people now a days just care about their phone and maybe their laptop, maybe. I see a decline in values and good as I see the decline in human interaction. Then she also does all this through theatre which just gives me hope that theatre will continue to flourish as movie theaters have already seen declines in tickets I couldn’t imagine live theatre was doing any better. Overall, a truly amazing person is doing a very inspiring thing.
