Theater Reviews + Features | Pittsburgh City Paper: Let's pop in and visit with an old friend. Time was you couldn't swing a dead cat in this city without hitting a local production of Beth Henley's tragicomedy Crimes of the Heart. Not only does it feature a small cast and one set (enough to secure it a place in the heart of any theater company), but it comes with an impressive provenance: a host of theatrical awards, including the 1981 Pulitzer Prize. It's a funny, sweet show about three Mississippi sisters living through what one of them describes as a "very bad day."

I love this theater! I worked in their children's theater as a set, prop, costume, misc designer/builder the past two years and it was a lovely experience. It's a very small, low budget, family owned theater in the round. The theater used to be in an old barn house, but they built a new, very adorable theater next door, and they use the barn as a rehearsal and storage space. I did not get to see Crimes of the Heart, but Sunny Disney-Fitchet (Yes, she is related to THE Walt Disney) told me she thought it went very well. Because it's such a small theater, they do often have to cut scripts down, but they usually do a wonderful job. My favorite production I've seen there was One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It was awesome-especially in such a small, intimate setting. If any of you can make it across the river to Peter's Township to see a show, it's definitely worth the trip. Gotta love local theater!
