Laura Zimmermann Captures Period-Authentic Production Sound With Lectrosonics

ProSoundWeb: The 2024 biographical drama “I’m Still Here” (Portuguese: “Ainda Estou Aqui”), the first-ever Brazilian-produced motion picture to win an Academy Award in taking the Oscar for Best International Feature Film, saw production sound mixer Laura Zimmermann deploy a range of Lectrosonics wireless components to capture period-authentic, cinematic sound.

This article immediately caught my attention with its title. Sound design is something that I know I’ve loved since middle school, and emulating period-realistic sound is another really captivating aspect of it to me. I don’t necessarily know how it works or understand all of the related technology yet, but I sure hope to one day. I really appreciate what Salles did to give Zimmermann the freedom to create truly authentic sound for the film. It demonstrates a care for sound that I think many sound designers haven’t felt in the past. Putting money and effort into the sourcing of realistic items or locations is true dedication. I also really appreciate the effort and thought that was put into being given the opportunity to work with the art department to treat the surfaces to prepare the acoustics of the set. Giving actors more freedom to authentically act is something that I’ve never liked taking away as a sound designer, so I really appreciate all of the freedom and care that was put into this production.
