KPMB restores Toronto’s Massey Hall for a new century

www.archpaper.com: On the corner of Shuter and Victoria Streets in Toronto, the red-brick facade of Massey Hall has the dignity of its 19th-century origins, but inside the air hums with new electricity. Behind cast stone and stained-glass windows, KPMB Architects has completed a multi-year renovation of the 1894 concert hall.

This venue is absolutely gorgeous. Although it is located in Toronto it reminds me of my home in Texas. My childhood home had a red brick exterior and I think this is the first theatre with a brick exterior I have seen. It makes me feel so at home. I am also so pleased to see that the inside of the theatre is still very charming and was not gutted to create a minimalist modern aesthetic, although I do think there is a place for them. I am absolutely obsessed with the arch details within the theatre. I do not think I have seen anything like it, it reminds me of a gingerbread house for some reason. I found the retractable floor so cool. I know some theaters that have a retractable floor but they mainly use them to re-arrange the seating configuration. Having the orchestra seating turn into standing room is so smart and truly diversifies the type of show the venue can host; definitely something that is worth the investment.
