I really like how Arianne Phillips talks about costume design as something much deeper than just choosing clothes. The idea that costumes help build the world of a film makes so much sense, because what a character wears affects how we see them and how they see themselves. A costume can make someone look powerful, fragile, put together, or completely lost, and we pick up on that even before they say anything. Her point about the trust between actor and costume designer also stood out to me. It’s such a personal process, because clothing can change how someone feels in their own body, and that emotional connection ends up shaping the character. I’m usually not drawn to very flashy, dramatic costumes, but the way she describes the work makes me appreciate the detail and intention behind it. It honestly makes me want to pay more attention to costume choices when I watch movies now.
