A treat during a tricky time: Unions offer free Halloween costumes to children of federal workers

Georgia Public Broadcasting: Federal workers in Georgia missing paychecks during the government shutdown will not have to miss Halloween. This week, the unions who represent them are handing out holiday supplies, including costumes.

This is a really great way to give back, and I want to see it start happening elsewhere, especially in these times of hardship. The idea of making these kids be able to have a Halloween is a genuine way of providing support to those who need it during this time. Halloween costumes can honestly be pretty expensive, and even if they are just 10 or 15 dollars, that money can be used for other necessities that are more important due to the lack of money these workers are currently receiving. The unions definitely have enough stocked costumes that it wouldn't hurt to give them to those in need. Halloween is a special time for a kid. They get to become scary, silly, or what they want to be when they grow up and get candy. Providing these costumes is a way to get the community involved not only in celebrating Halloween, but also in realizing that these workers have help and support during this time of no pay.

This is really so great to read about. I think it speaks to the core of what a union's goal is, protecting and supporting workers. I think it's so important to read about the good things that are happening in this world even when everything feels like it's going to complete shit. with that being said I also think it's important to acknowledge that for how sweet this act is, we need to realize that this was completely avoidable. The people who caused this shutdown are still getting paid while millions of Americans starve and I find it absolutely abhorrent about the lack of action from our politicians. I really worry for those affected by the shutdown, especially because a lot of government employees might not be making enough to go on working without pay. I also think it's absolutely deplorable that ICE is still getting paid. if anyone shouldn't be it would be them. well I completely understand why Democrats are holding their ground on agreeing to a budget, there are the unintended consequences of hurting people.

I really love how creative this gesture is and how they really paid attention to what children really want and what would really make them happy. It’s also so nice that they are doing something for the children of these federal workers (and obviously the federal workers should be getting their own benefits as well), but to see their children who are being affected by their parents not being able to get paid but don't really understand what's going on is really nice and hopefully will allow them to understand how important the work their parents are doing is. Halloween is also the one day where you can dress up as anything you want and be whoever you want and I think also giving these kids such a wide variety of options without having to worry about the cost will allow them to be creative and express themselves more freely.

This article absolutely warmed my heart! In a state where unions are more and more at risk and many have the losing edge, it’s inspiring to see this level of community amongst the American Federation of Government Employees and the Atlanta-North Georgia Labor Council in giving out a hundred Halloween costumes to children for the workers struggling amongst the ongoing government shutdown. I especially love the fact that these people recognize how it’s often the little things that count, while at the same time hosting food drives and making efforts to support those in need in other ways as well. The small act of giving is such an incredible and important thing, and right now it’s what we need more than ever. I hope others take initiative from acts such as this, and it branches out to other organizations that aren’t even unions, organizations which don’t already serve their workers necessarily.
