Vogue: Fashion and film have been inextricably linked for the past century, with designers drawing inspiration from the silver screen and auteurs going to great lengths to secure the perfect costumes for their characters. Would Holly Golightly have become a pop culture sensation without Hubert de Givenchy’s sophisticated designs? And what would Belle de Jour be without Yves Saint Laurent or Barbarella without Paco Rabanne? Ahead of Vogue World: Hollywood, Vogue presents 16 of the best designer and director collaborations of all time.

I have a lot of mixed feelings regarding designer brands designing wardrobe in films. Its mainly because I think it's more important to have individual people design things rather than franchises that have to worry about their image. But this list pulls from older works where these designers were less of a brand than they are today. It's hard to say that I don't like designer fashion because I really do a lot of the time. I just hate seeing the same names sell the same things and repeat the same concepts every couple of years. It's what happens when artists get a team of assistants to construct their work, it gets worse because it gets extremely overproduced. However, designer fashion in film is pretty great when it's done right, and some of my favorite wardrobes and movies are on this list, such as fifth element and black swan. Fifth element is such a good example of this because Jean Paul Gaultier's distinct style and vision were so perfect for this film. Each wardrobe piece is gorgeous and extremely elaborate. I went down a crazy ebay rabbit hole once trying to find pieces from this film that were being auctioned off.
