Survey Shows Chicago Small Arts Sector Thriving

AMERICAN THEATRE: The Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation (GDDF) announced the results of its new Chicago Small Arts Sector Survey of 77 small arts organizations based in the Chicago region. These organizations span artistic genres, including theatre, dance, music, visual art, museums, and literary and multidisciplinary organizations. All survey participants have annual operating budgets under $1 million, with 73% reporting an annual budget of $500,000 or less. The survey was conducted from August to September 2024.

This is so exciting and soul-warming to read! About two weeks ago I read an article about a long-standing theatre that unfortunately had to shut down because of money issues. I wrote about how sad it was that you see more theatre's closing down then opening. However, reading this article today about smaller and newer theatres (and other arts institutions) that are thriving is gratifying and relieving. It has helped to restore my hope that theatre will continue to survive in both the modern day and in the future. Not only that, but the fact that 75% of them are making an effort to promote new works and artists is super cool. Arts industries are famously hard to break into, so the fact that there are places which are helping people to do exactly that is inspiring. I hope that all of these places continue to succeed and support the communities that they are based in and around.
