How To Use Unreal Engine to Create an Oscar-Worthy Film

nofilmschool.com: We’ve all heard the whispers. We've heard how Unreal Engine could be a game-changer for independent filmmakers, unlocking new ways of dreaming up worlds on screen from your very own home. The sort of ultra-realistic effects that used to be accessible only to huge filmmakers with massive budgets are now in the palms of anyone, anywhere with enough imagination (well, that and enough patience to teach themselves to use it).

Technology really changes everything doesn't it? Having these brilliant applications at a reach of a few buttons not only changes the art we make byt the way we think about making this art. Film has always been a super important part of my life. I have taken many film classes where we have learned about the inner makings of films as well as in depth film history. Starting with the first film, Eadweard Muybridge's The Horse in Motion– originally to see if a horse's legs all moved off the ground at the same time. It was a practical thing. It was shifted into an art form. One where people can escape into it, giving people enjoyment as well as giving people an outlet to another universe. I don't know if I want more “Avatar” blockbuster films, they aren't my taste, however I can appreciate how awesome the movies are and the significance of how far the film has come. One thing I wonder though is will films just lack substance in the future?

Game design and the game world is something that I am really into and something I follow very closely. That is the only medium through which I have ever interacted with unreal engine. I had no idea it could be used to make movies. As I read the article more I started to realize that I probably have seen unreal engine used in movie making because I’m a big Love, Death, and Robots fan. This article was super fun to read for me. I have spent a lot of my time learning the Unity game engine (purely for fun) and I always thought of it as a waste of my time. However, after reading this article, maybe it’s not as much of a waste of time as I thought it was. More and more video games and movies are colliding with each other. I like to imagine a world where video game creators and theater creators work together to create art. This is a very self indulgent imagination that isn’t very grounded in reality as my two biggest interests are video games and theater.
