I was drawn to this article has worked on setting up the headset system for the School of Music’s Opera production this past week. It’s interesting when you come to think of it. Headsets are vital to production. They are the medium through which the Stage Manager communicated with board operators, crew, and the front-of-the-house staff. Looking at You (title of the opera I worked on) had a fairly small crew yet used seven headsets total. All hooked to a system I set up. Granted, it’s not a hard task, but I will add, that it’s a skill I did not have before coming to this program. Now, reading about the Full-Duplex Wireless Intercom Headset System described in the article the idea of a hand-free portable headset sounds incredible. With no base station and no beltpacks required, I do wonder how exactly it works and what problems might arise– specifically how to troubleshoot if something goes wrong during production.
