Star Trek Strange New Worlds Uniforms Reveal New Details

gizmodo.com: In any other large franchise, each TV show getting its own new costumes and designs is just a perfectly normal thing. In Star Trek, it’s created a canonical tapestry that paints the picture of Starfleet’s uniform design department going mad with power in a post-money utopia society that lets them radically overhaul the design of a military/scientific/diplomatic force every few years for little reason than fashion.

As someone who grew up watching Star Trek, I am familiar with the costume “uniforms” that are worn by the actors in the movies and original tv series. In a franchise like this one, the uniforms and colors of them have meaning and allow the audience to pick up on certain situations. For example, when it is the rare occasion they are not wearing these uniforms, this tells us something about what the characters plan to do next or what the next challenge is. Something I find interesting in this article is when they mention how the storyline plays into the modernization or upgrading of these costumes. For me, this is always a question when watching tv/film franchises because I always enjoy seeing something a little updated about a character’s costume, however, I do like to see the reason why this was changed. This is something to think about in the theatre industry because costumes are always being improved or tweaked especially when a show decides to go on tour. I find it interesting how important consistency can be, especially in the costume department, for an audience’s perspective and understanding of a story.

The iconic outfits of star Trek are so suitably genius because it provides a new look that is both grounded in reality, while also looking incredibly futuristic. The overall shirts don’t look incredibly out of the ordinary, but the cut pattern and colors along with the badge all add to a subtle believable futuristic look. I find that in a lot of Sci-Fi films recently go way too overboard with the futuristic design of the costumes, when many audiences prefer to see clothing that is different, but sill relatable and grounded in a sensible reality like seen in Star Trek. I can only imagine how hard it is to slightly redesign the legendary Start Trek outfits in a way that still looks cool while remaining true to the original to the shows style. The changes are also so slight, but by changing fabric texture and coloration while also adding a more structured pattern, one can create an entirely new look to a show that everyone knows the look of. Revamping costumes like the ones seen in Star Trek can be a fine line, but I believe the designs seen in this edition of the show hold true to the style of the show and only add to the genera.

Ah, Star Trek. Sci-Fi in general. I don’t know what it is but I have never quite liked the Star Trek costumes. I think it is the little fine needle work and stitching into simple shirts. I think that is why I do not like Sci-fi costumes. They tend to be simple and intricate at the same time. The idea of materials that are “polymers” and do all these things. I can not imagine how much time these costumes take to make. The stitching is always inordinately intricate while looking so simplistic but for me I have always disliked them and I do not know why. Looking at these shirts up close I see tiny shooting stars and I think that is an impressive design choice, however personally I just can not get over my dislike of the Star Trek costumes no matter how much I might try. The remakes however are alway very subtle and I am always impressed as to how they are able to modernize them without detracting from the history.
