Pittsburgh Opera brings “fashion theater” to the runway

Fashion | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: In recent years, Pittsburgh has become a more fashion-forward city. Many designers across the region are providing Pittsburghers with unique hand-sewn or hand-painted wares. Shops and boutiques are bringing in big-name designers. A city that was once ridiculed for its fashion is having a moment.

I think it is really funny that Pittsburgh was once ridiculed for it’s fashion. Honestly I don’t think it’s that bad but I hang out with mostly costume designers. I also think I’m biased because I have been to Eons Fashion Antique and spend my time hanging out with people who love Eons. I said this in an earlier news comment, but I think that vintage repurposing and upcycling can and should be the future of fashion. I love that the Pittsburgh Opera is taking up fashion as a performance, especially sustainable fashion. David Parsakian seems really cool and his styling work for the Pittsburgh Opera piece looks stunning so far. Costume design and regular fashion are not separate ideas at all. Fashion designers and costume designers create pieces to serve a person, a story, and/or a theme. It’s just a matter of if the piece is in a performance or serves these ideas in day to day life.
