MDG’s theONE™ for Maroon 5 on outdoor amphitheatre tour

LightSoundJournal.com: Lighting designer/director, Brian Jenkins of Flicker Designs, who has worked with Maroon 5 for nine years, specified two of MDG‘s award-winning, dual haze and fog generators – aptly named, theONE™ – for the band’s 2020 tour before it was postponed due to the pandemic. After an 18-month enforced break, the tour resumed last summer with the band visiting many of North America’s largest outdoor amphitheatres playing to 15,000 – 30,000 capacity crowds.

theONE sounds like an incredible piece of equipment for touring productions like this one that require both fog and haze. Especially for concerts, it’s a piece of equipment that makes install and strike much easier, and allows for better control throughout the show. For theatrical productions and non-touring productions, I think it may cost more than it’s worth, as a separate hazer and fogger would be cheaper and allow for more strategic fog placement. In a situation where the speed and convenience of theONE aren’t as crucial as the money or placement, it’s a very smart invention. This is clearly the thought process of the creators themselves, as the touring rig for theONE is made specifically for events like this one. The design of this concert is truly stunning, and the design is especially highlighted by the thick haze that defines concerts. I am glad that theONE was used so artfully in this concert.

Although I am not a big fan of Maroon 5 or their music, the lighting design of their shows definitely makes it seem like they would make for an incredible visual experience regardless. The lighting design of live concerts definitely strongly influences the mood of the entire atmosphere, so good execution of such is critical in making for a good experience. Brian Jenkins, the lighting designer and director for Maroon 5’s live concerts, commitment and design for these unique outdoor amphitheater spaces is also super interesting; the extreme output abilities of their theOne’s systems is definitely the right choice for an outdoor performance area. The design elements are able to be controlled better and match the “high energy” of the music of a band such as Maroon 5. The specially designed touring cradles for theOne’s generators were also incredibly helpful in moving things around after the shows; I imagine that this kind of technology definitely makes the touring aspect of these shows much easier and efficient.
