I am really excited to see this musical. As an Asian person, I very rarely see myself represented on the musical theatre stage, so it’s super exciting that KPOP, which features an almost entirely Asian cast, will be going on Broadway so soon. Funny enough, the last Asian person I saw on Broadway was a CMU School of Drama alumni, and I first heard about KPOP the Musical through a SOD alum who is currently involved with the production. But despite my initial hype, I was somewhat dismayed when I took a look through their production team and discovered that many of the creative heads are white. It’s hard then not to question the logistics of having a white person lead the lyrical composition or the dance choreography of Asian music on a show about Asian music; the alumni who I talked to about the musical had also mentioned DEI related issues arising in the workplace regarding the white director. The 2017 cast of this show was predominantly Asian, but the full cast of this one has yet to be released with the exception of famed Kpop singer, Luna; it’s hard to imagine the cast not being mostly Asian, so I am cautiously optimistic about that aspect as well.
