New park regulation moves Three Rivers Arts Festival to Downtown

News | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival will move from its long-time home after new usage rules and regulations were passed for Point State Park. In a press release, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announced that the organization can no longer utilize the park for the free 10-day arts celebration, and will instead move the event entirely to the Downtown Cultural District in 2022.

I love the Three Rivers Arts Festival. I ty to go every year and make a point to buy art from from the venders ever time I go. It is a fantastic way to support local artist and see so many fun performances. I'm a little bit sad that it won't be at point state park this year because the sun and open air aspect of the park really adds something beautiful to the art festival. However I am really glad that they are taking the health of the park into consideration and prioritizing that so more people can enjoy the park without the wear and tear from the crowded festival. The downtown based festival last year was so much fun and seemed to be a great success, so I have no doubt that it will be just as amazing this year, and I can always visit the park once I've seen all of the amazing art to get that summer vibe.

The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival has historically been hosted in Point State Park, however, due to new regulations regarding big events in the park, as declared by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has announced that the event will be moved entirely to the Downtown Cultural District. I strongly believe that free, cultural events like these that showcase local artists–through live music at the Dollar Bank mainstage, an Artist Market with over 300 shops and sellers, as well as the PCT's galleries Downtown–are key to maintaining and increasing the cultural scene in any city. It has been key in fighting gentrification around Pittsburgh, especially culturally significant sites, and has been key for 'urban revitalization', as Trust president and CEO Kevin McMahon says. Specifically regarding this festival, I am glad that the Trust has chosen to adapt the event, both preserving the park and preserving an important annual event for the city.

I think it’s very disappointing and sad that The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival which has historically been hosted in Point State Park is being moved since the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has announced that the event will be moved entirely to the Downtown Cultural District because of new regulations regarding big events in the park, as declared by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. I think the old spot was a such an iconic Pittsburgh center and the water alongside Point Park made it look so cool. I wonder what the event will look like this year at the new location. I do understand the argument for park preservation and that must be something that we take very seriously as people, it will be exciting to go check out some cool art and this years festival while also seeing if it’s new location in the cultural district does the festival justice
