Pittsburgh galleries, museums debut new shows for spring 2022

Spring Guide | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: Spring is here, and with it, the promise of new art exhibits at various galleries and museums throughout Pittsburgh. From unseen works by a celebrated photographer, to the return of a major international fiber arts showcase, the city will have plenty of interesting shows to see this season.

I wish there was more of a culture in museums and event attendance in my generations, I think it is so important to self-educate and experience these events. It also supports the community and the people involved in putting it all together. Personally, I love museums and galleries, but they have to be of a certain subject to really draw me in. I really happily go to a natural history museum if it means learning something new or odd, but I would rather go to an ‘avant-garde’ or contemporary art gallery that explodes and breaks boundaries simply because they can. I feel more connected to that idea, but I know many who don’t. I also wish I had more relevant and accessible materials such as enumeration event schedules and content description. But I am so glad to find this article, because even the photos themselves inspire me, and excite me. I will add these galleries to my list, and explore them, whenever I find the time in this busy life.

This is a really great list of upcoming exhibitions! One of my favourite Pittsburgh things is to wander downtown into all the little galleries and take in new art. Going to museums and galleries to look at new work or look at work in a new way is the key method that I use to broaden my artistic worldview and look for inspiration. I will add to this list and say that the August Wilson August Wilson African American Cultural Center has galleries year round that uplift and platform Black artists in particular. Over the weekend I worked as a gallery attendant at the second floor gallery, where filmmaker Garrett Bradley exhibited 'American Rhapsody'--two single-channel videos and a multi-channel video installation: America (2019), AKA (2019), and Alone (2017). I love seeing how versatile media is as a medium, both in theater and in the gallery world–it was great to see another example of how it can be used within the arts.

This is great! I’ve been trying to make more time to explore Pittsburgh and the art available here; I’ve lived here for almost 2 years and have barely seen any of the museums, galleries, performances, that are happening. I really want to broaden my horizons and experience more of the art that is happening around me here, and this is a great list for me to continue that with! One that particularly interests me is the “Drawn Together” exhibit at Unsmoke Systems Artspace. Kirsten Ervin and Suzanne Werder drew each other every day of this past January, and the exhibit is all of those portraits. I’d love to see how each one is different and captures a different aspect of their personalities over such a specific and short period of time, both in the portraits they drew and the ones of them. Really, really interesting: I’m definitely going to try to see some of these!

Recently I’ve been finding myself with the capacity and empowered desire to explore the area I’m going to be in for the next four years. For me this has come in the form of a mostly physical exploration of buildings and area around the school but also some more artistic exploration. Both have been really fulfilling and peaceful but the latter in a very short amount of time, I know there’s been a ton that I missed, gave me a list of a dozen artists that to look into; It’s a patten that I very much would like to continue, getting more familiar with the place I live and being inspired by it. I really enjoy the wide spread of artists given by the list, especially since I know that I tend towards really enjoying one or two pieces by artists over whole scales of work, especially that some of those entries sounded like they were pushing boundaries that I did not recognize.
