Pixar's 'Lightyear' Restores Same-Sex Kiss

www.themarysue.com: Pixar is set to debut its first same-sex kiss in the upcoming film Lightyear. The film, which stars Chris Evans as the real-life hero that inspired Toy Story character Buzz Lightyear, will feature a lesbian character named Hawthorne, voiced by Uzo Aduba. Hawthorne is in a relationship with another woman, and while said relationship was hinted in the film, a planned kiss was cut.

This reminds me of a comment I wrote in a previous post. In that post, I talked about how there was this whole story of how poor Disney must be paralyzed to say anything agasint a the “Don’t Say Gay” bill that is a literal human rights violation hides the real power and influence large corporations such as Disney has on the government. Its not like Disney has not changed legislation before. Just look at the copyright laws that they changed in order to keep Mickey Mouse out of the public domain. Since when did Disney care THAT much about its image. When Disney releases Pride merch during June, everyone labeled them as hypocritical. But that didn’t stop Disney from still capitalizing off of its LGBTQ audience and employees. Maybe its time to stop babying multibillion dollar corporations and start forcing them to take responsibilities for their actions. Back to this article, this is literally the tiniest step, if that. I wouldn’t be surprised if they uncut this scene in light of their recent controversy and cut it again when it comes out. In the end, it might be censored anyways.

Despite the fact that the western world for the most part seems to be embracing LGBTQ+ rights, large entertainment companies are still unable to portray queer characters. LGBTQ+ characters have much more representation in theatre and television, but when it comes to movies, it is still a relatively uncharted territory. ESPECIALLY with Disney. It frustrates me, as a queer person, as I find this form of representation incredibly important. I remember how validated I felt upon seeing the first healthy portrayal of a lesbian couple in media (thank you Falsettos!). For young queer kids who are struggling to understand and feel comfortable and proud of themselves and their identities, having queer characters in mainstream media is incredibly important. It would allow people in general of all ages to not feel alone in their experience. I don't fully understand why Disney won't produce these stories and characters. I believe they think it will cause fewer people to view their movies, resulting in less money produced? It is incredibly infuriating to me that money is more important than making people feel represented.

This is the bare minimum, but I am still SO excited to see this kiss. I am thankful that Disney opted to align with its millions of employees and fans who participated in the walkouts and protests following the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. I am hopeful for the representation that this couple will bring to the Disney and Pixar universe. It should be clear by now to Dinsey that people need the representation, did you see The Secret Life of Pets ride? There has been so little LGBTQIA+ representation within these worlds that I am excited to finally see some change happening. This is especially important when being in the LGBTQIA+ community feels like they’re going back in time because of the oppressive laws they are facing today. Love will always win and Disney showed that they agree, at least for the time being. I will wait patiently for this movie to come out not only so I can reminisce my childhood but also take a moment to appreciate how much I enjoy it when art is made to make people happy.
