This is an interesting conundrum. I am glad that the unions are reacting to the tragedy on the set of Rust however I am a bit confused about how they are reacting. I appreciate the demand for a union approved safety supervisor on set and the demand for timely paperwork to ensure that everyone gets the pay and benefits they were promised. However, if the director and crew members did not notice any safety hazards on the set it makes me wonder why the Directors Guild pulled their people off of the project. It created a very difficult decision for Shane Drake as this would have been his debut film. Still if DAG, IATSE, and SAG-AFTRA are all looking into the safety on the set of this one project in one way or another it is indicative that something is a little off. I hope that safety on set is taken even more seriously after the what happened on Rust however I think that if this is the unions responding to it, they should say something and maybe be a bit more obvious about their intensions.
