This show is quite a challenge, and I know that from first hand experience. At my high school, I stage managed a production of this and it consisted of a lot of really lost teenagers running around doing their best, which did frankly add to the comedy. But, because this play is so demanding on the three players, with so many parts and such a high demand on them, it quickly turned into a mess in my case. Design wise, we also struggled with achieving the aspirational creative vision. It was very challenging to create the “Globe Theater” and find a way to support the satirical nature of the show on a budget and with limited resources (i.e. labor, education, time, etc.). So, to me, Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks’ choice of work is rather odd. I don’t see much value in the show, as the writing lacks clarity and sophistication. To me it entirely discredits the genius of Shakespeare’s work, and so it feels like an odd choice for a Shakespeare company to choose.
