The Rockettes are kicking up their diversity, adding three new African-American women, a second Latina and a “differently-abled” dancer with one hand.
Casting a wider net for the 2019 Christmas Spectacular, the world-renowned precision dance troupe held “open call” auditions in Chicago and Atlanta for the first time in 10 years, as well as at Radio City.

This article made me smile. It is great to see that the producers and casting agents for the Radio City Rockettes have realized that only have one black dancer isn’t a diverse enough cast. It is good to see that not only opening up who is picked was a necessity but also that the auditions needed to take place in other cities than New York City. It is nice to see that the producers realized that there are barriers that stop being from applying to jobs with in-person auditions. Something that might defeat the whole point of the Rockettes is opening up that height requirement. This is a huge industry issue of requiring performers such as the Rockettes and many child performers to maintain a certain height and weight. This is extremely restrictive on people and I understand EEOC entertainment clauses but I think if the industry wants to be more inclusive then they should be less restrictive of things that don’t necessarily affect the performance.
