The Aha Moment: When Life Gets in the Way

ProSoundNetwork.com: My parents both grew up on farms in Saskatchewan. My grandparents were homesteaders who moved to the prairies at the turn of the last century; there, they dug out and built sod homes to protect themselves from the brutal winter cold and oppressive summer heat before they could afford to build a real house. Mom’s family had 11 kids; dad’s 13.

Reading this just makes me realize how little I know about sound. If you asked me about any other design area I might have a clue as to what goes on but when it comes to sound I’m lost. I know how to put on a mic (had to do that a lot on high school) but I never really realize all the details that go into sound. It makes sense, but I would never think about the difference of bass on different surfaces (cement, wood, marble, etc). I really enjoyed reading about “life getting in the way” because it is so incredibly true! Its a constant struggle of having amazing ideas or ambitions but never going through with them because there are other things that take priority at the time. Product engineering is also another vital part of the entertainment industry that we don’t really think about as we study design. I like knowing that there are different job options out there and that the path of designing isn’t the only job I can look forward to in the future. I really enjoyed reading this article and some really amazing life lessons are kept in this reading (even if you don’t like sound you can take a lot away from this article)

As someone who studies entrepreneurship alongside the work I do in the school of Drama, this article was really interesting to read. The writer is absolutely right. The best ideas come from paying attention and asking the right questions. The toughest part of entrepreneurship is taking that initial risk. Even if you’ve done tests with glowing reviews - you can never truly anticipate what the majority response for a product will be. Peter Janis seems to have a really strong understanding of the importance of pushing an idea forward and not being fearful of the consequences. Part of what he writes about it how his father never pursued an idea that he thought would be great and is now a very common invention seem in the winter time. I like the motto of not letting life get in the way. It’s very positive but it’s also reminding people about not letting time just pass you by.
