A Basic Guide to Microphone Specifications
Pro Audio Files: Choosing a mic can be a daunting task when confronted with specification sheets littered with numbers that may seem meaningless since making comparisons across similar mics is not easily done. There is usually no hard reference or minimum level of acceptability to guide your choice. And often the measurement units or methods used vary across manufacturers, further complicating matters.

If I were to buy a microphone, I would definitely refer to this chart. Looking at spec sheets tends to make my eyes glaze over, but this was really helpful at explaining the specifics. It might be helpful for technical things (like microphones) to have an easy comparison chart, sort of like nutrition facts so it’s easy to compare and contrast products objectively. If there were some sort of standardized spec sheet, it would make the buying process easier. The article did a great job of stepping through the different data points, but it also might be important to give us some idea of what data points are important and which ones aren’t as important when making a decision about microphones. It’s also interesting how SNR and ENR are numbers that are directly by a simple subtraction problem, so I do wonder why they are two separate individual data points.
