Is an Atlanta speedway showing us the future of theme parks?

www.themeparkinsider.com: Last year, I asked if an American auto racing track could support a theme park development, in a post titled Imagining America's 'Ferrari World'. I suggested the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the concept, but now another race track has gone ahead and proposed its own theme park development plan.

What’s disappointing about this is that this company is probably going to dedicate most of their money and efforts to making a nice casino, and a couple shitty roller coasters. I love theme parks. I think they can be really creative and often more than just the roller coasters that are apart of the experience. However, good roller coasters are the reason people will return to a place like this, not a casino. It also feels a little odd considering that roller coasters are for a younger audience than those that go to casinos. I wonder who they intend the audience of this time of development to be. The images within this article suggest that there has been minimal to no research done about what an actually feasible roller coaster would be. Especially considering how much time huge companies like Disney spend planning, designing, and then executing their roller coasters, we know that this is a lengthy process. If they want to build a resort, than leave the shitty coasters out of the damn equation.

I hope the developers of this project don’t manipulate it to create a casino. I want more theme parks!!! I love going to Cedar Point for a day, going on vacation or a school trip to Disney, etc. The manipulation of the idea of a theme park just for the justification of a casino just takes my childhood dreams, stomps on them, then proceeds to throw them into an incinerator. At the same time though, looking into modern theme parks, maybe I’m blinded by all of the epic roller coasters, but I haven’t seen many, if any, casinos around the modern theme park scene. I didn’t see anything even at Disney, besides maybe a bar here or there that I remember. I really hope that corporations don’t take this lack of casinos as an invitation, but god only knows what’ll happen with the evolution of the roller coaster and theme park industry.

I'm... a little confused by this development. I live in the area, and I can definitely say that the major Six Flags Over Georgia right outside the city (and about 10 minutes away from my high school, for that matter) is theme park enough for Atlanta! It's kind of frightening to think that these developers are using the idea of a theme park as the leverage they need for their casino. It's obvious that they haven't put much thought into the theme park side (as seen by their weird renderings that look like something I would've made in the Sims back in middle school), and I also can't help but wonder... what demographic is this being marketed toward??? Rollercoasters and casinos? This is weird. Also, they should probably consider the fact that maybe the religious southern folk of Georgia probably aren't going to be interested in a casino in town!

Ok so this looks pretty cool- but I'm with my peers here, They want to create a casino? I understand that amusement parks are speedways in particular are a very selfish money making ploy that is dedicated to taking more and more money out of their patrons pockets for the sake of "entertainment", but it seems like they have gone a little too far. I'm a big fan of amusement parks and I very much grew up going to Universal Studios and Six Flags- I'm what some people call a thrill junkie. This kind of breaks my heart because the purpose of amusement parks shouldn't be to create a Casino, there are other places for that and even if they'd make a lot of dirty money from doing this, I think that betting on family friendly environments could be just as good and can make a lot of money for the company- hopefully they'll read this comment and change their minds.

I like roller coasters and entertainment rides, but I think they are boring. That is the rides themselves are unexciting. This is if it’s a theme park like six flags where they entertainment comes solely from the thrill... too which I have become numb to. If it is a theme park like Disneyland or universal then it becomes much more entertaining because it I’m there for the theme rather than the ride, the ride is just the vehicle that allows you to experience it and when done well it heightens the experience. In all, while I love this idea of putting theme parks in places like racetracks, I don’t see it really being worth it or all that appealing. As it appears this is also a ploy to bring in a casino then it also makes sense. A fair number of casinos have rides attached them and now you have tripled your pull of people. Anyone that wants to race will go there, anyone who wants some thrill can go there, and now anyone that wants to gamble, drink, smoke, etc. can also go there. And all people are in the appropriate place where it is considered acceptable. Of course, this only works if it is done right and all three things are there.
