No Proscenium: The Guide To Everything Immersive: Have you ever wondered how a two man band could feel like a rock ensemble backed by an orchestra? Ever longed to see music videos come to life? Do you lust after the state of the art in theatrical showmanship?
Well, come on down to The Chemist, just past the woods at the edge of Anhedonia (aka LA’s Arts District) and get yourself a ticket to CAGES, a rock opera that does all these things and serves up an immersive course at intermission for good measure.

Fist off, I just want to express how much I love the idea and effect of rock operas (at least the good ones). One of my favorite musicals is Toxic Avenger, but there are many other rock operas I have fallen deeply in love with. Secondly, watching the trailer for this show felt more like a preview in a movie theater than watching a preview of a live production. The skill and range of media designers in the theater industry right now really astounds me because they are creating a new standard within design. While I feel like it can make it harder for other forms of design to keep up, it also provides new challenges and opportunities to push ideas of what we think are possible in live performance. The reason I think media design has gotten so much traction recently is because when people talk about how media impacts a performance it has something to do with immersion and bending of reality, and with experiential theater becoming so popular right now as well it just gives these two artistic mediums the opportunity to build off of each other. I just think its so cool that this kind of design is so readily available now because I think that theater that uses this kind of performance attracts a wider audience and opens people up to what performance can be.
