2019 Top Tour Managers

Pollstar | Top Tour Managers Hub: “Continue to follow your dream and make sure you feed your crew well!”

Words for any tour manager to live by, wisely said by Marty Hom, one of Pollstar’s 2019 Top Tour Managers, someone who intrinsically understands the live business is a team sport and empty stomachs can mean poor team performance.

The coolest part of this article is finding out how all of the managers come from different worlds. I am always amazed when guests come into Purnell and talk about how they became production managers or stage managers because there are a million different ways. The sad part of this article is seeing how undiverse these top tour managers are. Most of them are white and a lot of them are men. I keep hearing about how fearless these people are, which is really nice to see the importance of being fearless. I think this article also drives home the point that good managers have amazing instincts. It is also nice to see how important people skills are in managing and how they build up with time. Using people management skills is my favorite part of management so it is nice seeing that in the real world these skills are very important. One piece of advice that I have to keep seeing over and over again that I didn’t expect was to start from the ground up. A lot of these managers advise knowing what everyone else does. I am glad to be part of a program that allows me to do this for the first 3 semesters and beyond as it seems to be a useful skill.
