Hail Zombo! Detroit's Theatre Bizarre

Control Geek: Last year, my friends from the phenomenal NYC band Mother Feather posted pictures of a show from Detroit, at an event I had heard about but really didn’t know well: Theatre Bizarre. The whole thing looked amazing, and since I’m always up for a road trip, when I heard MF was returning this year, I cashed in some miles and got a flight to Detroit on a rare weekend where we were off from building our own Gravesend Inn. And I’m really glad I did: Theatre Bizarre is one of the most amazing show/events/happenings I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot

I’ve never heard about Theatre Bizarre. The photos in this article look incredible. What an experience, wow I really want to go. “The Greatest Masquerade on Earth” has been going on for a long time. The fact that this event occupies eight floors and several hundred THOUSAND square feet is freaking incredible. It’s bigger than Sleep No More! A massive immersive art presentation. This thing is the size of a cruise ship. Also, the fact that this doesn’t have any company - it’s simply a mass of friends who are passionate people. Truly an incredible experience. To think that this group of people change every single light bulb in this building. There is a dedication to this project that I have never seen before. Rooted in sideshow and horror and carnivals and Detroit, this project is incredible. The fact that these people were arrested in their original manifestation of this project. To reshape their project for this temple because it was not the original location. I’m definitely going to go or try to work for them. So damn cool.

When I first started getting into theatre in college, I thought theatre was a play or musical performed onstage or in a space, in front of a live audience, and I thought that the other forms of performing arts (like Theatre Bizarre) were just other forms of live entertainment. I didn't realize that "theatre" came in such a variety of live performances. Obviously, after theatre history classes and more exposure to theatre, I now know better. I feel like every day I am learning about a different forms of theatre. With that being said, this is a very interesting form of theatre, with quite the theme. From the images I am getting circus meets masquerade meets ritualistic sacrifice. I guess the name should have tipped me off but I really wasn't expecting this. I was happy to see the jack-o'-lanterns and trick or treat signs because then it made more sense to me...halloween. All of my fear of stepping into Theatre Bizarre and being sacrificed aside, this is actually pretty cool in terms of the environment that has been created and the dedication to the theme and the storytelling here. I really do appreciate the artistic value of this and I'm sure it is a memorable experience.
