Dublin Fringe Festival 2019: Women in Flux

The Theatre Times: The Dublin Fringe Festival celebrates its 25th year this year and duly provided the Irish capital its characteristic combination of artistry, controlled chaos and thought-provoking content. The stated theme of Dublin Fringe 25, was “Power and Pleasure”, an exploration of what power means in Ireland in 2019, who wields it, and how that power is used. One strong through-line emerges, that of women in flux.

While the shows talked about for the Dublin Fringe Festival sparked my interest with their depth and room for emotional contemplation, the article feels as if it doesn't do these performances justice. Besides being hard to follow and a bit scattered it felt as if the author was writing to an audience that either had prior knowledge of the show or asked for vague and lightly confusing ideas and information about the shows. While I appreciated Shluaghadhain's attempt at creating the tone of the shows with their descriptions it created an almost flowery and opinionated writing style that focused on specific, but unknown to the audience, details which came off as lacking evidence. While I'm deeply intrigued by the natures of the line up and the female-centric ideas for Fringe 25 it was hard to take the author's views into account since they touched on details you wouldn't know what to do with until AFTER being exposed to the festival.

I have never heard of the Fringe Festivals until recently. about a year ago I heard that my home town, San Diego, CA, hosted a fringe festival where many artists got to meet and display their work. I don't know that much more about these fringe festivals but it is cool to see that it is a gathering of artists. It is also very interesting knowing they are a much more adaptable event than just being in San Diego. According to this article, the Dublin Fringe Festival just ended its 25th year. Apparently, this years festival theme in Dublin was "Power and Pleasure." I wish this article went more in depth about what was displayed at this festival. It's wiritten more as a summary to explain what was shown if you were a visitor to the festival. As someone who has never been, it is hard to get the feeling of what Dublin's 25th Fringe Festival was like and what was shown there.

Really would have loved to see some of these works at the Dublin Fringe Festival. It sounds like there was a great range of styles and approaches in communicating and contextualizing the struggles of a women in our everyday world. I think some of these shows really stuck with their methods of delivery with their stories I think the idea of Minefield in particular and it’s use of social networking platforms to construct as well as restrict the characters and their story within the play. I will admit that my accumulation of new content and plays within the theatre world has been pretty poor since arriving at grad school and something that I need to work on to be better informed on the greater context of the industry outside the department I am directly studying. I think that looking for opportunities to be part of shows and companies that are doing work I can get behind on multiple levels would be really fulfilling to be a part of and hopefully something I can eventually accomplish, works like the ones being presented here as well as at other theatre festivals of a similar nature.
