I love how this show not only embraces environment, but highlights the magic of these transitional spaces using art in all forms. I am always a little bit skeptical of immersive environments, not in that I don’t believe people follow through in embracing them and creating something beautiful there, but in that I feel as through those working on them tend to fall in to a space of resenting the challenges they pose, and that is when the project loses passion and becomes painful. Instead of allowing the design to fluctuate to accommodate the space, many people become focused on preserving their design to fit the space how they imagined it to be. Embracing the pieces that may not live up to the ideal or may not interact with the design in the ways one hopes is the true test of whether or not a piece is truly immersed. I look forward to seeing more from this event, and wish them luck moving forward!
With something as iconic to this city as its staircases, it is an amazing idea to use them to celebrate the art and culture of Pittsburgh. I checked the event schedule, and there are block parties, fashion shows, and installations planned for this weekend in Pittsburgh! If I wasn’t working on Susan’s shoe project I would definitely try and go. The event organizers took notice of the stairs in disrepair and are hoping that this event will help call attention to fixing the infrastructure. But, to me, what’s even more important is preserving the staircases that represent historical ties between communities in this city. The events will bring a wide array of arts and culture to many communities in Pittsburgh and this is always something to be encouraged and celebrated. (Also, Pittsburgh having the most steps than any other city in the United States?! I had no idea! Bridges AND stairs).
