Sandy Powell, Up for Two Costume Design Oscars, Leads the Field.

Variety: Sandy Powell has done it again: For the third time in her career, she’s doubled up on nominations in the category of costume design, with her nominations this year for “Mary Poppins Returns” and “The Favourite.” But almost equally extraordinary is the fact that she worked on both films concurrently.

Sandy Powell is a QUEEN. What an amazing artist and what an incredible feat to be nominated for two Oscars multiple years throughout one's career. Although I do hope that Ruth Carter will win for her “Black Panther” costume design, Sandy Powell’s work is extremely impressive. I also think the stark contrast of budget between these two productions that Powell has the opportunity to work on is an awesome challenge she had to deal with. I’ve seen “The Favorite” and I'm really shocked to hear that she used denim and reused materials to create a lot of the outfits within the movie. The material doesn’t look like it's inexpensive or reused. I have yet to see the new version of Mary Poppins but I am definitely going to be looking for those pops of color that Powell describes in this interview. I also love how she worked on a serious period piece and then a period piece with a heavy fantastical element attached.

Powell underestimates the public’s familiarity with the period of the early 18th century, but since our country was founded in the same century we are quite familiar with certain trends and and styles of that century. White wigs are fairly universal. I will argue with her though that the costumes in the animation should stand apart because while I love them they do blend in within the overall scene. The most successful costume was the opening coat it was striking and elegant and very in character. The least successful were the horrendous colors on the Banks’s it felt more Brady Bunch and less 30’s. I loved both of the films very much, but I remember the costumes more from Poppins, which might be a bad thing because in the Favourite they truly felt like clothes not like they had been designed by any person, her original intention successfully achieved for the film.

Sandy Powell’s costumes are literally AMAZING. When I saw Mary Poppins the only thing I was focused on was the costumes in it and how beautifully designed they were. I specifically loved the storybook-esque costumes in the movie, that they had on during the cartoon vase scene. I love how they were painted to look 2-D and I definitely want to try to make costumes inspired by them one day. I love the fact that she was working on two different movies at the same time because that’s the kind of life I am used to. I am constantly busy and working on a million different things at once, and I guess I imagine my career will be like that too. It’s nice to hear that someone in the industry is doing what I dream of doing and doing it so well. Overall, I think she is an amazing costumer and I hope I can live up to her impressive career one day.

I really liked "The Favorite" so I was really excited to see this article. I think that her costumes were beautiful and I am so happy that she has double nominations because she honestly deserves them. I did not love "Mary Poppins Returns" but that was really only because of the plotline, the technical aspects were all amazing. The video in this article was really fun because it showed aspects of her process in the voice over and I really appreciate that. I love hearing about other designers and how they work because sometimes one of their methods is something that I can implement into my own work flow to improve. I am so excited to see what she does next because she has costumes a lot of hits and I know that this is still just the beginning. There are so many fun and wonderful opportunities as more media is made.
