Why video games are made of tiny triangles

YouTube: Games today are meticulously detailed. They’re mysterious and heartwarming, and colorful and stylized. And that makes them a technical challenge. Though computing power has skyrocketed, gamemakers keep competing to add more detail to their games, pushing the limits of what even the newest technology can compute. Game technology needs to constantly keep up with gamemakers’ creative ambitions.

Vox’s videos have always been incredibly thought provoking because they cover detailed aspects of everything from politics to video games. This video was particularly interesting to me because of its inside look at the creation of modern, highly detailed video games. Growing up I played a number of MMORPGs and at some point decided I wanted to be a designer and animator for them one day. Obviously I changed my mind, but the insight that the gaming industry provides on being detail oriented and creating visually enticing work is something that I think I can learn a lot from. I really enjoyed seeing how something so simple as a triangle could be built up into something so much more complex. I think it draws a lot of parallels to how we work in theatre: taking an idea and building it up into a message, action, set, sound, costume, etc… Overall I also just loved seeing how far game design has come since I was a kid.
