Trailblazing Women: Victoria Morgan's Cincinnati Ballet

Pointe: Victoria Morgan's normally bright smile is even brighter entering her 22nd season as Cincinnati Ballet's artistic director. That's because the 55-year-old company is in the best shape it has ever been: Attendance, ticket sales and the company's annual operating budget are at all-time highs. But the road to Cincinnati Ballet's current successes required an early revamp in Morgan's thinking about programming.

I love hearing about companies with a female artistic director. All of the theatres and local dance companies I have worked at have been led by men, and I really enjoy seeing at least a step towards greater representation. It is really exciting that Morgan is using her position to highlight female choreographers to the point of having several all-female choreographer programs. I also appreciate the Morgan is allowing those choreographers to experiment with varieties of styles, which broadens the entire company’s skill. Dancers have grown so much due to the dynamic and diverse repertoire. All of this change is built off of a strong and continuing foundation in the classics. All of this comes together to create a really positive environment that new students can thrive and grow within. Morgan has created this really strong organization that is focused on opening itself to diversity and new material, and it is a really beautiful thing.
