When's the Last Time You Saw Asian-American Southerners On Stage?

Theatre Development Fund – TDF: Leah Nanako Winkler started writing God Said This while keeping her cancer-stricken mother company during chemotherapy sessions in Kentucky. "It just came out," the playwright recalls -- though not all at once. Each week Winkler traveled between the Bluegrass State where she grew up and her current New York City home, she would return with new pages to present to the writers group she was in at Primary Stages.

I think it is important to see representation in media not only for those who need to see themselves as insiders rather than outsiders to our mainstream society, but also for those who do not think about those communities. As such a large country it is easy to not interact with multiple portions of the nation and many of the small communities within it. It is easy to either forget their importance to the fabric of our community or follow purely stereotypes regarding their cultures. I think the most important part of this playwrights mission is breaking these stereotypes. There are many who put characters onstage only to play up or fulfill those stereotypes for a cheap laugh, yet they get credit for increasing representation with a single real moment. I hope this play and other similar plays gain traction and spread the reality and complexity of real people to all ends of this country.
