Point Source Audio Sounding Board: Video on Customizing the EMBRACE Mic for Better Concealment
Stage Directions: One of the challenges that face both designers and technicians is how to hide a microphone on an actor. In their hair or in their costume; there weren’t a lot of good solutions to this challenge, until Point Source Audio created its EMBRACE™ Earmount microphone solution. As a customizable mic’ing solution that is engineered for concealing, EMBRACE has earned praise from end-users, as well as two patents from the U.S. Patent Office.

This mic is beautiful, but not as versatile for theaters which change actors frequently. I love the mics indiscreet structure, and am surprised at how well the mic appears to pick up the audio. I am curious to how this is effected by simple things such as someone with pig cheeks that puff out, considering the sound might be a little clocked that way. I really appreciate the company providing three different skin tones, this just shows a company doing the minimal effort to be inclusive. People are not created in a light beige or black, and I remember some POC actors in my highschool somewhat uncomfortable when we had “skin tone” mics which did not fit their complexion. Going to get mic’d as an actor is nervous and preparing for a show is no time for them to be worrying about being a person of colour, the rest of the outside world takes care of that. These colour options not only help with visibility, but with an actors comfort and mindset. As much as I am a fan of these mics, it would be interesting to see them have a more adjustable length, so one does not have to worry if their limited number of ear pieces which are already preclipped match the ear sizes of a new cast.
