Artist Transforms His Face With Incredible Optical Illusion Makeup

mymodernmet.com: From 3D drawings that seem to jump off the page to mind-boggling hyperrealistic art, we’ve seen many skilled artists transform 2D surfaces into 3D illusions. However, professional makeup artist Luca Luce takes playing with perspective to a whole new level by using his own face as his canvas. The Italian artist showcases the astonishing power of makeup, creating mind-blowing looks that are equally creepy as they are captivating.

Luca is an amazing artist. His talent proves that you can take one skill such as being a makeup artist and turn into anything you want. Typically, makeup artists work in the entertainment industry putting makeup on other people, but Luca was able to go a more unusual route and successfully produce something new. I really like the pieces he does that completely change the shape of his face. In general, optical illusions are difficult to execute, but especially on the face. Humans are programmed to see faces. That’s why we see faces in everyday objects like clouds, trees, cars, and even the tiles on the bathroom floor. Anything that resembles eyes and a mouth can be turned into a face (ex: emojis). The fact that he can turn something so concrete and familiar into an illusion and trick out minds in truly unbelievable. His skills are unique and I’d love to learn how he does it.

I think makeup and the ways in which it is being explored today is still very new for some people. Not many view makeup as an art, but I think that it’s a lot harder than it looks. A makeup artists has to know the fundamentals of their craft just like any artist. There is a right and wrong way to do everything and their art form is both public and person, as they can do makeup on themselves or clients. Not everyone can be good at makeup just like how other people aren’t good at other things, but thats why makeup artists are necessary. This makeup artist specializes in illusion makeup where he manipulates what the eye can see. Normally this is scene with special effects media or painters/ scene designers, who create something that isn’t actually there. The 3D illusion makeup that this artist did is something that I know I would not be able to achieve on my own. The looks that he does are intricate, detailed, and very tedious which I think takes lots of talent to try and recreate.

Drawing optical illusions is incredibly interesting on paper, but even more so when it’s done on someone’s skin - or face in this situation. Makeup is a skill that’s a lot like painting, but I find it much more difficult because you have to do it while looking in a mirror and at quite a different hand angle than usual. I think the way Luca Luce does this is really fascinating, and is incredibly clean. His different looks almost seem like photoshop manipulations. It’s also a bit different from a lot of makeup artists on Instagram that solely do eyeshadow looks. It’s a lot like the show “skin wars” where they paint on people’s bodies to look like different themed things, as the human body makes for quite an interesting and unique canvas. I also really like what he does on his hand, such as the eyeball and the spider. It reminds me a lot of when I used to draw on my hand and arm back in elementary, middle and high school.

I think this is incredible. I love what artists are doing these days where they take a non-traditional canvas and use them to create art that we are used to seeing done more traditionally. Definitely, one of my favorite kinds of art to look at his body and face illusions so my favorite part of this article was just scrolling through the pictures at the end. I think Emily brought up a very interesting point which was that most makeup artists just paint other people but the work that Luce has been able to do on his own face to distort the natural human instinct to see what they think a face should be is incredible. The article mentions that he started working by painting his hands and then moved to his head, and I have to say I like the work on the head more than that on the hand. I think the ability he has to fool the mind using the negative space on the head is incredible and for some reason tricks my brain more when on his face than his hand.

This is so cool! I love body art I think that it is incredibly hard and I've never been able to do it properly but I would love to learn. One of my favority guilty pleasure shows is "Skin Wars" and this article reminded me of that. However instead of bright colors, this guy uses blacks and neutrals to make his head into different architectural things. The one that really caught my eye is the ladder leaning against the wall because it looks particularly difficult to me. I would not even know where to begin - although that really applies to all of them. I also really like the one where it looks like a brush is going through his nose. He must have a lot of patience and time to perfect this skill because I feel like I would give up after like twenty minutes. If I ever got to meet him I would want to learn his ways because it is really interesting to me.

Luca is so damn amazing! I love his artwork so much. Makeup is taking social media by storm with all of the artists, self taught and trained, posting all of their designs and creations. Like Sophie mentioned, it all just reminds me of the work done on the show “Skin Wars” . I have binge watched that show probably like 3 times already. Optical illusions are some of the coolest tricks makeup has the possibility to offer. The level of skill and difficulty is astounding and they make it look so effortless. Makeup artists have truly been dominating all of my news feeds and I’m loving it. A lot of people use that as their main income in they accumulate enough followers for their work. One of my friends from high school gets sponsorships from the makeup work he posts on Instagram. It’s a very cool industry that just boomed from the age of social media and I couldn’t be happier.

What Lucca accomplishes with makeup is amazing! How he creatives this optical illusions is genius. Understanding perspective, and how to maneuver around his canvas. The way he shades, how he understands light and shadows really shows up in his work. This really shines to me in the ones where he changes the bone structure of his face into these wacky geometric 3D illusions. You can really tell he's been a makeup artist for 18 years, and the optical illusion work for the last 4 years. Its really cool how he took his skills from working as a Tv celebrity makeup artist, into something fun for himself (and all of his instagram fans). I went to his instagram page and saw his most recent one where he made his head split and have a globe revealed to be inside his head, I can't image how long it look to get those results.
