NAMM 2019: Live Sound Takes Center Stage

www.livedesignonline.com: The NAMM Show has been slowly broadening its focus on pro audio and live sound, and this year it finally hit its stride, with more pro audio exhibitors, expanded educational programming, and the launch of the Loudspeaker Systems Showcase, which gave P.A. manufacturers an opportunity to demo their systems in a real-world setting. Click through our slideshow of live sound gear debuts from that other Happiest Place on Earth.

Interesting; most of these items seem like fairly run-of-the-mill, incremental innovations. A few don’t seem particularly useful at all in most theatrical settings: I really don’t understand why people would pay for DSP enabled speakers. In all but the most specific of circumstances it should be cheaper and more straightforward to use a central DSP unit that can control all of your sound sources, and which can be easily monitored from a central location. What caught my eye the most was not the speakers or the amps or the microphones, but the AirHush inflatable acoustic panels and the “M-noise” from Meyer. I couldn’t find a price online for the AirHush panels, but assuming that they are relatively cheap (or will be soon), they could do wonders both for noise pollution and for temporary or quick changes to sound environments. These panels could be stored easily and then added, moved, or removed in a small amount of time to suit the needs of a theatrical production. As for the M-noise, without using it I have no idea if it will actually be useful for system tuning, but I’m certainly interested to find out.
