The Pittsburgh Tatler: Playwright/poet/performer Brian Quijada has hope for the future.
That’s not an easy orientation to maintain these days, particularly for someone who belongs – like Quijada himself – to the unjustly maligned community of people who are, or once were, undocumented migrants from Latin America. Yet paradoxically, it’s his own experience growing up the son of illegal immigrants from El Salvador that gives him hope for his yet-to-be-conceived mixed-race child.

This sounds like an unforgettable performance. “Where did we sit on the bus?” by Brian Quijada appears to be an impressive one man show due to the use to technology that accompanies an impressive performer. I’m currently in a Latinx Theatre class and I found this article really interesting when reflecting on what I’ve learning within that class. I wish I could’ve seen this show, because I’m wondering if the writer of this article actually means Latinx “stereotypes” or Latinx characteristics. After recently reading two very different plays by Latinx playwrights, I think there is a difference between a play that takes place where people speak Spanish or are of Spanish origin, versus a play about people from Spanish speaking countries that are just living their lives. I’m also beyond certain that this show highlights the many many problems with our xenophobic world and how American politics are changing the climate for minorities.
