"The Hindu" Notes On 2018 Indian Musicals

The Theatre Times: If broadsheets and banners are to be taken into account, this has been another fertile year for Indian musical spectaculars that have, for all appearances, packed them in with ticket rates that might rival those on the West End. On the heels of 2015’s Beauty And The Beast, Disney brought us an all-Indian production of Aladdin, directed by Shruti Sharma, that stays true to the international franchise in letter and spirit, with some departures—a Hindi-speaking Genie, for instance.

As someone who grew up around Indian culture, and who has grandparents that still actively practice Hinduism, this article intrigued me. It made me really happy to read that the ticket rates this year were high enough to compete with the West End. I think a lot of people who are “woke” these days still only focus on Western culture and forget about the whole world that exists in the East. It’s nice to hear that Indian musicals are doing so well, even if they aren’t as well recognized. I really enjoyed hearing that they did an all-Indian production of Aladdin, with a Hindi-speaking Genie, because it feels like a much more realistic version of what the musical strives to be. While I understand why Disney made an ethnic movie/musical more western, for western viewers, it’s nice to think of a version of it that actually stays true to the culture they used to make the story in the first place.
