What do SNL, Orange is the New Black and Louie Anderson have in common?
www.popcitymedia.com: The director of "Saturday Night Live," a writer on "Orange is the New Black" and comedian Louie Anderson, whose animated series Life With Louie earned Emmys in the 1990s, all have Pittsburgh connections, but more importantly they are coming to the city to speak as part of the new Steeltown Spotlight Series.

I opened this article at first because I am a huge fan of "Orange is the New Black." However, the actual topic of this article sends a much different message. I think it is great that Pittsburgh is developing such a strong base in the film and television industries. It can be seen everywhere, from building that are still painted like Gotham City to streets that are closed for shoots. There are also many positive things that are unseen, such as the amount of talent that is coming from here in the backstage and writing departments. The city is truly becoming a place for people in the entertainment industry to thrive, and I hope to continue to see it grow in this direction.
I think I was at first a little reluctant to think of Pittsburgh as booming arts city, but after a year of living here and reading articles like this, I see that I should have been much more open. I knew that there were alot of well known artists who came through Pittsburgh, but I like that this event is focusing on people from the Pittsburgh area. I think Pittsburgh probably doesn't get as much credit as it deserves for all the contributions it has made. Hopefully this event will not only get a little more respect for the city but encourage people to seek more artists from the area, resulting in even more expansion for Pittsburgh's claims to the entertainment industry.
Well first, I love "Orange is the New Black" and am usually a loyal viewer of SNL and I had no idea they had connections to Pittsburgh. When I first came to Pittsburgh for my freshman year in 2012 I had no idea that there was such a large artistic community and I think it's great! It's so cool how Pittsburgh has not only been thriving in the arts itself but has also helped produce many successful people and pieces. I think art is an extremely important aspect in people's lives that is usually looked down upon or just neglected. I love how Pittsburgh encourages its community and the students who go to the multiple colleges here to pursue their passions and to express who we are and what we want to do.
I think it is great that Pittsburgh is becoming more and more of an art city. I think and hope that this will eventually help the art graduates of CMU and other universities in Pittsburgh to have more opportunities in town when they graduate as well as while they are in school. I feel like Pittsburgh is already pretty cultural so it will be interesting to see how Steeltown Entertainment Project impacts the city.
