How Do Techs Magically Pinpoint A Problem Frequency?

Pro Sound Web: So there I was, hunkered down in the sound booth with the congregation rioting around me. Two instruments were vying for the same dominant frequencies and I could hear an elder yell, “MAKE THIS NIGHTMARE END!” Sweat was pouring down my face. “Think man, think,” I told myself. “You’ve trained for this very type of scenario.”

(CUE STAR WARS IMPERIAL MARCH) Ah, frequency problems every amateur sound engineers worst nightmare, including myself. This article does tell it all, it all comes with experience. Having experience with sound I am starting to better be able to pick out frequencies using what this author calls "zones". I have began to work on practicing my ear training bit by bit but am not at any level to be able to pick out a certain frequency over others. I am exited because after declaring sound design as my major I will be taking an ear training course to better my skill in this subject.
