Latina/o Theater Commons: Advancing the Field

HowlRound: In August 2012, I wrote about the genesis of the Latina/o Theater Commons. Since that time, our initiative continues to grow and expand. As we approach our first national convening this month, I offer the following overview of our efforts to date.

This article is sort of hard to get through because it mostly just lists committee members and responsibilities instead of focusing on the issues that the Commons is tackling. That being said, it's so great to hear that so many people are joining together and committing to making the Latino/a voice heard in American theatre and fixing a SERIOUS representation problem that theatre currently has. This problem extends to every field, be it latin actors struggling to get cast, directors and playwrights who can't get their work mounted, to more "traditional" discrimination in job selection and hiring. I am encouraged by next summer's festival at DePaul, and I hope it will set a precedent for creating more opportunities for Latino/a theatre artists.
