NT's Norris: "In terms of gender balance and cultural diversity, it will be exciting to see where we can go"

News - The Stage: The National Theatre’s newly appointed artistic director Rufus Norris has said he will “attack” his new role with “vitality and gusto”, pledging to broaden the venue’s audiences further. He has revealed that while the venue’s core programming will always be based around the canon, he wants to take the venue into “new areas and periods of development, without alienating anyone at all”.

Norris sounds like he will be a promising addition to the National Theatre. I like what he had to about form following content. I think that is a very important concept to keep in mind, especially today with the new uses of technology that are available to us. I feel like sometimes theatre is produced more for the spectacle of the show, not the story or message behind it. I'm glad Norris is taking that into consideration. He also sounds like a promising new leader because he is already admitting that he will want help from people and that he is willing to collaborate, which is largely what theatre is all about.

Having an artistic director with such an open mind is a huge asset to any theatre company, as his enthusiasm for any type of theatre will also allow for a wide array of audiences to be reached. Norris's appreciation for what is behind the show, not what it looks like but how the script and the characters come together cohesively on stage is more rare than it should be amongst people of his position, and this will make his choices stronger. The fact that he is looking to pull shows that cover all genders, sizes, and socioeconomic ranges delineates his true appreciation for the art of theatre. Hopefully he will live up to everything in this article and change the theatre for the better.
